With the "Gründungsoffensive Biotechnologie" (GO-Bio), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is specifically promoting the transfer of research ideas from basic research in the life sciences to application. The forward-looking and long-term funding strategy lays the foundation for later success in the market.

Increasing the level of technological maturity and qualifying teams as success factors

The commercialisation success of life science research is heavily dependent on the maturity of a technology. Only relatively advanced technologies offer an opportunity/risk profile that is attractive to investors or licence holders.

For this reason, the transfer and founding of companies in the field of life sciences requires special funding that is specifically tailored to the diverse challenges in this field. In order to meet this need, the BMBF has launched the two funding programmes GO-Bio initial and GO-Bio next under the umbrella of the "Gründungsoffensive Biotechnologie". They significantly increase the degree of maturity of innovative research approaches. They also support the teams with regard to industry-specific challenges by providing advice and offering training events. This combines academic research and industrial development. In addition, they secure economic returns from basic life science research for society. And this strengthens Germany's international pioneering role in the life sciences.
